The original Hugues Marine garage was a small, one-story structure in Gustavia. The small lot with sloping streets on two sides presented challenges...but also opportunities. At the garden level, the existing garage was maintained but placed above it was a new structure to house a boutique and even offices in an attic space. Also, the floor was lowered 50 centimeters and new footings were built underneath while keeping the original walls.
The sloping terrain adjacent the site allowed, in effect, two entrances at different levels; one for the garage on the garden level and a second for the boutique at the first floor. An elevator was added to provide accessibility for disabled persons. Lastly, as an extra bit of space saving, automobile duo-lifts
were incorporated into the design.
